Space Digital produces US hit short film ‘Slaughterbots’

A hard-hitting short film about autonomous weapons which is making headlines across the world, was written and produced in MediaCityUK.

Award-winning production and visual effects specialists, Space Digital, based at MediaCityUK, also did all of the post-production on ‘Slaughterbots’, which was made for the USA’s Future of Life Institute.

The film channels a near-future dystopian world where artificially intelligent drones become terrifying killing machines in an attempt to raise awareness about the dangers of autonomous weapons.

With over 400,000 views on YouTube on its initial release and articles published in the Guardian, Independent, CNN and Daily Mail, the film has obviously struck a chord with viewers and concerned spectators.

Space Digital was approached directly by the Boston-based Institute, whose aim is to catalyse and support research and initiatives for safeguarding life and developing optimistic visions of the future, including positive ways for humanity to steer its own course considering new technologies and challenges.

Space Digital MD Matthew Nelson said: “We’re proud to have been approached to produce a film on such an important matter – and it highlights the unique capabilities we have here at Space Digital. The film was shot on location at Hertfordshire University, Peterborough and Edinburgh, and the complete post included 150 visual effects shots.  The end result is extremely impactful.”

Now in its 11th year, Space Digital has an impressive reputation in the industry and, earlier this year, won a coveted Silver Award at the prestigious Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards.
