The Roads We Walked is IWM North’s newest Big Picture Show, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress, which took place at Chorlton-on-Medlock Town Hall, Manchester, in October 1945.
This meeting of 200 activists, intellectuals, journalists, trade unionists, and political leaders, including three future presidents, was a key factor in the many African independence movements that followed.
The film has been written by a group of young poets from Manchester’s literary charity Young Identity, and the script is composed entirely from their own spoken-word reflections, highlighting the key delegates and their demands, and focusing on Manchester’s radical legacy, both past and present.
Produced by Soup Collective, this new addition to IWM North’s award-winning 360-degree cinematic Big Picture Shows uses surround sound, moving images and photographs to create a powerful and immersive experience, bringing to light the legacy and significance of the Congress.
