Peel L&P demonstrates climate resilience by re-verifying net zero carbon buildings and saving 558 tonnes of carbon in a year

10 of Peel’s buildings have demonstrated net zero carbon status for a second year running, saving 558 tonnes of carbon in a year the equivalent volume of 98 full Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The properties in Greater Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow have been re-verified against the UK Green Building Council’s (UKGBC) 2019 definition based on their operational carbon emissions, action taken to reduce those emissions and their renewable energy use.

Peel L&P achieved the carbon reductions between 1 April 2019 and 31 March 2020 through a range of energy saving projects across its buildings.

The qualifying buildings, ranging from 25,000 sq ft to over 120,000 sq ft, include The Venus in TraffordCity, No.8, No.10 and No.12 Princes Dock at Liverpool Waters and three properties at MediaCityUK in Salford Quays. (Full list below).

Jo Holden, Peel L&P’s Sustainability Director said: “As part of our ambition to become more climate resilient, this is our second year of verifying net zero carbon buildings. We have reduced our electricity use by 7% and gas use by 1% between April 2019 and March 2020 (like for like), which has been achieved by our energy team implementing 51 energy saving opportunities during 2019-20.”

The total amount of carbon to offset has been reduced by 558 tonnes. Peel L&P currently uses a Verified Carbon Standard project, twinned with tree-planting in the North West, for carbon offsetting. In the future, the company would like to see a wider range of off-setting opportunities that benefit the North of England becoming available.

In 2020, Peel L&P’s buildings became the first in the UK to meet the UKGBC’s net zero carbon definition.

Peel L&P’s work to reduce carbon emissions across its assets is part of its five-year sustainability plan which supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) to help create a fair and sustainable planet by 2030. In 2020, Peel L&P set a science-based target to reduce emissions intensity by 68% and energy use by 25% within offices by 2030.
