Plans have been submitted by Peel L&P to transform Quayside MediaCity (formerly known as The Lowry) shopping centre’s southern canal side walkway into a vibrant waterside food, drink and retail offer including a market foodhall which will champion local and regional vendors.
Reflecting Salford Quays rich cultural heritage, the proposed plans will feature six new pop-up units created from shipping containers, new terraces for outdoor dining, enhanced landscaping as well as an indoor independent foodhall and community space.
Peel L&P’s latest planning submission follows the recent ‘Salford Quays: A New Vision 2030’ launch which aims to better enable Quayside MediaCity to play a role as the town centre for Salford Quays and as a valued community facility.
The proposed plans for Quayside MediaCity build on the key principles of the Salford Quays Vision: A place that puts people at the centre, works for everyone, where creativity brings people together, that’s dedicated to wellbeing and that celebrates its past.
Investment has already started on Quayside MediaCity with a revamp of its food court planned, marking the start of a £5 million investment plan and revitalised five-year vision for the shopping centre which also aims to bring a health and wellbeing hub to the first floor, including a medical centre as well as community event space.
Stephen Wild, Peel L&P’s Director for Strategic Investment and Growth said: “Planning permission was granted in 2019 for a remodelled southern waterfront for a scheme known as the Watergardens. However, since then, we have lived through a pandemic which has refocused our minds on what our local community needs. Following extensive consultation with those who live and work within Salford Quays during 2021 it identified an appetite for an enhanced provision of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, markets or a market hall and a medical centre.”
